Staff Report
Women's Hockey
The ninth-ranked women's hockey team fell victim to a Kohl Center Sweep against the No. 5 University of Wisconsin Badgers by scores of 4-1 and 4-0 Friday and Saturday.
Sophomore Holly Roberts scored the lone tally in the weekend for the Huskies with 26 seconds left to go in Friday's contest. Goaltender Kendall Newell stopped 49 shots on the weekend.
Wisconsin ended the Huskies eight-game unbeaten streak. An NCAA record 5,377 people were in attendance for Saturday's contest.
The Huskies have a home and home series with Minnesota State, Mankato. The series is the second Skate for a Cure weekend, and funds will be collected for Breast Cancer Research.
Track and Field
Amanda Kunkel placed fourth in the shotput with a throw of 44 feet, 9 3/4 inches and held the highest position for the Huskies at the Jack Johnson Minnesota Track and Field Classic.
Other notables include Holly Dombrovski's eighth place finish with a time of 2:24.75 in the 800-meter. Valerie Fuchs also earned a 15 foot, 9 inch mark in the long jump. Angela Walhovd had a good day, placing eighth in the 60-meter hurdles and 10th in the pentathlon.
Men's Basketball
Down by four at halftime, SCSU scored 50 points in the second half and held off the University of Minnesota-Duluth 82-73 to snap the Huskies two-game losing skid against NCC opponents.
The Huskies played well in the second half, shooting 68 percent and going 4-for-7 beyond the arc. Minnesota Duluth was outscored 50-37 in the second half.
David Dreas scored a season best 31 points and went 5-for-8 from three-point land. Ross Winnekins had his second-best scoring night of his career, netting 18 points. Matt Schneck crashed the boards and ended up with nine rebounds.
The team shot well from the free throw line, nailing 20-of-22, 16 in the second half.
The Huskies look to continue their momentum against No. 16 University of Nebraska-Omaha Saturday, Feb. 2.
Women's Basketball
SCSU women's basketball did not have the same luck against the University of Minnesota-Duluth as the men's team did. The women's team lost 72-65 in Duluth.
Kayla Rengal had a strong all-around game and recorded her third double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Rachel Booth led all scorers with 17 points and was 6-for-11 from the field. Katie Tacheny also had a strong game with 13 points and four steals.
Minnesota-Duluth was sound at the free throw line down the stretch, making seven from the charity stripe in the final 32 seconds.
The Huskies outscored Minnesota-Duluth in the paint by a 30-22 margin.
Next up for the Huskies is a battle at Nebraska-Omaha Saturday, Feb. 2.
