Issue date: 2/18/08 Section: Briefly
ACCOKEEK, Md. - A car crashed into a group of spectators who were watching an illegal street race early Saturday morning.
Eight people were killed in the accident and five more are still hospitalized.
The accident happened at about 3 a.m., police said, when a car was driving north along Route 210.
Investigators believe racers were preparing for the race by "burning out" and revving their car engines, causing smoke and debris to make visibility on the road more difficult.
