St Cloud police offers have been conducting enhanced “Click It or Ticket” seat belt patrols from Oct. 9 onwards.
This is the first full-scale seat belt law enforcement effort since the Minnesota’s seat belt law became effective back on June 9.
The law requires all passengers, including those in the back seat, to be buckled up or seated in correct child restraint.
Law enforcement officers have the ability to stop and ticket motorists for seat belt violations and each citation will cost the violator a hefty sum of $108.
Law enforcement also plans to start emphasizing their enforcements efforts toward special nighttime seat belt enforcement patrols.
The Minnesota Department of Public Safety reported that from 2006-2008, 1097 motorists were killed in crashes of which 539 were unbelted.
The St. Cloud Police Department is particularly concerned about teens and young adults as they were reported to be the least likely to buckle up and are also overrepresented in traffic deaths.
Approximately 400 law enforcement agencies statewide will be participating in the effort coordinated by the Minnesota Department of Public Safety as part of the state’s “Toward Zero Death” initiative.
Toward Zero Death is a multi-agency approach to address traffic issues regionally.
