The SCSU Offense struggled this week. Here they line up against Minnesota-Crookston at homecoming last weekend.

Last weekend, at homecoming, the Huskies blew out Minnesota-Crookston putting up 65 points against the Golden Eagles and holding them to a single touchdown.

This week, the Huskies were on the opposite end as the Bulldogs of Minnesota-Duluth handed the Huskies their first loss in five weeks, winning 31-7.

With the loss, the Huskies fall to 4-4 overall on the season, 4-3 in the NSIC and 3-1 in the NSIC North.

The Huskies fell behind early as Duluth quarterback Chase Vogler hit D.J Winfield for nine yards, the first of two touchdowns on the day for Winfield.

The Huskies were unable to answer and the Bulldogs never looked back. They scored another touchdown in the first quarter on a sneak by Vogler.

The mainstay for the Bulldogs though is their running back, Isaac Odim. Odim had 123 yards on 21 carries a 5.5 average. He now has 1278 yards on the season and also has 19 touchdowns, although the Huskies didn’t allow him one Saturday.

“They have a very good running back in Isaac Odim and turned to be the difference in the game as far as him breaking a lot of tackles and getting them positive yards and control the ball,” said SCSU head coach Scott Underwood.

The lone touchdown for the Huskies came late in the fourth quarter from Donte Steward. The junior led the Huskies in rushing with 34 yards on five carries.

Junior wide receiver Fred Williams led the Huskies in receiving, catching six passes for fifty yards.

Sophomore starting running back Brandon Geiss left the game in the first half, and quarter back Mitch Watkins left in the fourth quarter with injuries. Both are being evaluated to see how serious they (the injuries) are, Underwood said.

“Well I think the key thing is that (to) watch film and evaluate the mistakes and the good things that we’ve done and try and correct the bad things,” Underwood said.

The Huskies and the Bulldogs played a pretty clean game, each only turning the ball over once.

SCSU quarterback Mitch Watkins now has thrown four interceptions this season. He also has fifteen touchdowns and 1460 yards. He is also in the top 5 in the NSIC with a 67 completion percentage.

Williams 52 catches for 626 yards.

“Well, I think certainly the execution of our total offense isn’t at the level it needs to be at,” Underwood said. “To be just a half a game out at this point, we will see where we can fix execution with all the offense.”

The Huskies return home to take on Mary at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Husky Stadium.

The game will be the annual the Hall of Fame game. Mary is 5-3 on the season and 5-2 in the NSIC.
