On Friday, June 23, at1 p.m, you could hear the laughing, joking and collision of titanium striking a golf ball at Wapicada Golf Club in Sauk Rapids in the perfect sunny conditions ranging from 79-84 degrees.
For the past eight years the Gridiron Club has hosted the golf fundraiser for the Husky Football team.
President of the club is Fire Chief Bill Mund who supports the football team throughout the season.
“We were formed in 1999 and we are made up of former players, parents, community members and we even have student membership,” said Mund. “The club has sponsored bus trips, we have brought software to the coaches for game film and do anything we can when the coaches ask for something.”
“It is an opportunity for the alumni and other supporters to get involved, get together and talk about football,” said Head Coach Scott Underwood. “Its all in good fun and good spirit.”
Registration for the tournament started at 11 am and the first shot started at 1 p.m.
“We had about 132 people come out and play today,” said Underwood. “The weather was outstanding, the day was great, and it was a great day for Husky football.”
With the tournament starting at one, it didn’t end until 6:30 pm that evening. At the end of the day, there were chances for raffle prizes such as autographs baseballs from the Minnesota Twins and footballs from the Minnesota Vikings, as well as various other prizes supported by local businesses and the football team. There was also a dinner put on for all the golfers to sit down, eat and enjoy themselves with fellow alumni and football supporters.
“We have experienced a lot over the years,” said Mund. “As a community member and a part of the Gridiron Club, I like to see student athletes have a memorable time in college and great support from their community.”
There was also other chances to win big on the course. If you got a hole-in-one or the longest drive on a specific hole you would win something. Players were winning prizes and with other chances throughout the day.
Coaches and players participated throughout the day’s activities.
“We help get everything ready,” said Underwood. “We would be at different stations grilling brats and talking with players.”
The support for the golf tournament has risen quite extensively in the past year.
“We had around 55 competitors last year in the tournament and we made a complete turnaround with the 132 player turnout we had this year,” said Underwood. “Its great to see this improvement and we have appreciated all the support we can get from the players, parents, community members and the booster club.”
“Although 132 players sounds like a lot, we still welcome more players to come and join us,” said Mund. “Anybody can play and we could always use more support. Community member are welcome to join for a great cause in Husky football.”
