Student government to hold election Dec. 10 and 11
SCSU students will get another chance Dec. 10 and 11 to have their voices heard. The two days will see students vie for 10 positions available in student government as college senators during an election.
Student government has two kinds of senators in its makeup - college senators and senators-at-large. While senators-at-large have positions that run throughout an academic year, college senators’ positions run from spring semester to the fall semester of the following academic year.
There are two positions open for each of the five colleges at SCSU - College of Education, G.R. Herberger College of Business, College of Social Sciences, College of Fine Arts and Humanities and College of Science and Engineering.
Student government president Shahjehan Ganny said applications for the positions were due Thursday. However, student government would be holding informational meetings Wednesday and Thursday to enable those interested to find out more about the positions and the duties that go with them.
“(The meetings) will be held at 3 p.m in the Primrose Room (in Atwood Memorial Center),” he said. “(Those interested) can come for either (meeting), whichever they prefer. We will be telling them where they can and cannot put up posters (as publicity for the elections) as well as rules for the elections.”
Students can cast their ballots Dec. 10 and 11 during business hours at locations that have yet to be decided.
“It’s (the locations) are to be announced (later),” Ganny said. “But we will most likely have a booth at Atwood and one at Stewart Hall.”
Students will need their student ID cards in order to vote. Their IDs will be scanned through a machine. This is to ensure that a student only votes once. Students will then be given a ballot sheet to cast their vote.
Was voting is done on the second day, the ballots will be counted and the winners announced the next day.
“We will most probably have a list posted by Wednesday evening (Dec. 12) in our office,” Ganny said.
College senators are a vital part of student government and the student body as a whole. College senators are required to meet regularly with their respective deans so that a healthy line of communication can be set up between the colleges and student government.
But it is not only this that marks the duties of a college senator. Any problem a student or several students may have within their respective colleges can be brought up with their college senator, who will then bring the issue to the attention of student government, whether through its many committees or at its weekly meeting on Thursday. Student government will, in turn, try to resolve the issue by playing the middle person between the student body and the university.
“It’s important that students get involved in student government,” Ganny said. “Every college has issues that need consideration and the best way to get this done is through the college senators. It’s also important that the students vote so that they can have representation (in their respective colleges).”
