Swimmers gain split with Coyotes
The SCSU swim and dive team traveled to South Dakota to do battle with the Coyotes on Saturday. The Huskies split the meet as the women won 151-80, while the men lost 156-81.
Fatigue from hard practices showed for both the men and the women. Although it seemed to pay off for the women. First year swimmer Tennyson Anseth received her B-cut in the 1,000 yard freestyle with a personal best of 10:53.70. The B-cut means that she can swim any other event she qualifies with a B-cut. If she gets an A-cut in any other event, she qualifies automatically for nationals.
“Actually, I didn’t feel very great during that event, but I was shocked by my time. I think we have been working really hard in practice so I felt kind of worn down,” Tennyson said.
Although a B-cut is a great accomplishment, Tennyson believes she could still go for an A-cut.
“I’m hoping too. That’s one of my goals, but if I don’t I’m not going to be that disappointed. It’s just something to shoot for.”
Tennyson also won the 500 yard freestyle (5:21.41). That was the second B-cut this year for the Huskies. Junior Tesia Zuba was the first to qualify for a B-cut in the 100 yard breaststroke during the St. Cloud Invitational.
Zuba had another great performance this week as she had a personal best time of 55.61 in the 100 yard freestyle. Senior Khanya Bode also had a personal best in the 100 yard breaststroke timing in at 1:09.57.
Becky Colbert, Beth Lococo, Tara Gonia, and Bode won the 400 yard medley relay with a time of 4:14.26, and Gonia would later team up with Kim Braun, Zuba and Anseth to win the 800 freestyle relay (8:18.57).
Braun also won the 200 yard freestyle timing in at 2:01.76 as Lococo won the 100 yard butterfly (1:01.34). Senior Beth Mattson won the one meter (223.00) and the three meter (225.70) diving competitions for the Huskies.
The men appeared to run out of gas against a strong USD squad.
“They swam pretty well but nothing outstanding,” said coach Jeff Hegle. “They swam a good meet and they did their best against USD. USD was just too deep and strong for us to compete with them right now.”
Sophomore captain Micah Eberle showed a strong performance by winning the 200 yard freestyle (1:49.06) and the 100 yard backstroke (55.20). The men continued to show their impressive relay performance with a win in the 800 yard freestyle relay timing in at 7:19.78.
The Huskies continue their grueling practices during an important and difficult stretch in the season, but hope that they will pay off.
“They are working really hard in practice and that’s about all I can ask from them right now,” Hegle said. They’re starting to get to a tough part in the season where they’re starting to get tired and worn down. It’s tough to keep working at this time and they’ve been going at it for a while now and they’re still working hard. That’s the most important thing that they can do, and they have a good attitude.”
The Huskies will compete in the University of North Dakota Invite on Dec. 8th for their next competition.
