Swimmers make a splash during break tournaments
The SCSU swim and dive team competed in one invite, a training trip to Florida and two conference duals since the new year began.
The Huskies traveled to Florida on January 5th for the 32nd annual Ocean Mile Swim. Twenty teams from around the country showed up to participate. Although the Huskies were able to enjoy the warm weather work was their number one priority.
“It was a great experience. We were there strictly for work. They swam four and a half hours a day and had dry land training one hour a day,” said coach Jeff Hegle.
SCSU’s Gabe Kern, Sean Gonia, Kim Braun, Tesia Zuba and Tennyson Anseth were members of the squad that won the mixed college division.
Anseth placed second in the women’s overall division and second in the female freshman division. Braun finished third in the women’s overall division and first in the senior women’s division. Zuba finished second in the Women’s Classic. Kern finished eighth in the sophomore male division while teammate Gonia finished second in the junior male division. Dusty Lovold finished eighth in the senior competition for the Huskies.
The Huskies competed Jan. 11 and 12 in the St. John’s Invite in Collegeville. The women placed second while the men placed third. Zuba had a great performance winning the 200 IM (2:13.64), 100 breast stroke (1:07.60), 400 IM (4:42.07) and the 200 breast stroke (2:28.12). Senior Braun won the 500 free (5:20.01) and the 200 free (2:00.08). Gonia performed well for the men winning the 500 free(4:50.07) and the 200 free(1:46.56).
Both the men and women lost at UW-Eau Claire on Friday. The women lost 116-104 and the men lost 118-116 Marie Jacobs, Jessica Metkowski, Khanya Bode and Jamie Sanborn won the 200 meter medley relay timing in at 1:58.82.
On the men’s side Gonia won both the 1650 free (17:09.69) and the 500 free (5:00.35). Senior Tim Hillen won the 200 free (1:51.48) and captain Micah Eberle won the 200 IM (2:03.15).
Saturday the Huskies hosted St.Olaf at the Halenbeck pool. The women won 129-110 but the men lost 158-81 Braun won the 200 free (2:01.28) and Bode won the 200 breast stroke (2:31.21). Zuba won both the 200 IM (2:14.82) and the 100 free (:55.37). Diver Beth Mattson won both of the diving events. She scored a 238.20 in the one meter board and a 233.35 in the three meter board. On the men’s side Gabe Kern won both the 500 free (:22.46) and the 100 free (:49.51). Eberle finished first in the 200 IM (2:04.04) and Gonia won the 500 free (4:54.11).
“We aren’t as concerned with wins and losses as much right now but we’re focusing more on our training. We have about four quality practices left before the kids can rest their muscles,” Hegle said.
With the season winding down the Huskies are already looking towards their goal of getting to nationals. “At this point we are looking more towards the end of the year. We are focusing on conference and even nationals,” Gonia said.
