Wrestlers hold their ground

| The SCSU wrestling squad continued to show steady signs of improvement over the Christmas break as they went 2-2 from Dec. 11 to Jan. 15.
Dec. 11 saw the grapplers square off and dispose of Southwest State by a score of 26-16. The Huskies were then off for an extended period of time before their next match against rivals Augsburg.
The Huskies returned to action on Jan. 8 against the always formidable and reigning division three champions Augsburg College. SCSU’s Dustin Darveaux was the only Husky to earn a victory on the evening as SCSU fell, 36-6. Darveaux earned a pin at the 4:07 mark of his match over Augsburg’s Scott Reiver to improve his overall record to 20-4.
SCSU had no time to hang their heads, however, as the Northern State Wolves arrived in Halenbeck Hall two days later to do battle. This time, it was SCSU who was in control as they rolled to a 24-12 victory.
The always reliable Darvaeux came through with another big win in the contest. SCSU’s Dan Duch (157 lbs.), Jon Duncombe (174 lbs.), Paul Breth (197 lbs.) and Derek Miller (125 lbs.) also came up with key victories.
The Huskies hoped to carry over the momentum from their impressive victory over Northern State into their much talked about Jan. 15 showdown with the number one ranked NDSU Bison. However, the Bison showed why they are ranked number one by thumping SCSU, 43-0.
“We were a little down after the NDSU match,” noted first year grappler Duncombe. “We just need to pick things back up and work harder to get back to where we want to be.”
SCSU traveled to Ohio this weekend to take part in Division II National Duals which took place on Saturday. A full recap of the weekend action will be available in the Jan. 24 edition of University Chronicle.
