Soul Asylum to play at Red Carpet

High profile bands are no stranger to St. Cloud. Semisonic, Jonny Lang and the J-Hawks are just a few who have graced the Red Carpet. Soon, another name will be added to the roster, and it is the name of none other than the Minneapolis indie-rockers, Soul Asylum, who will be performing on Feb. 15.

According to Red Carpet bar manager Troy Rahn the show was officially booked Jan. 17.

“Soul Asylum will be playing a 75-90 minute set and admission is tentatively $12 a ticket,” Rahn said.

According to Rahn, an opening band for the show has yet to be selected.

Dave Pirner, Dan Murphy and Karl Mueller make up the trio that generated more than 10 CDs since 1984, compiled a greatest hits collection called “Black and Gold” and celebrated two decades of Soul Asylum music in a 20th Anniversary show at First Avenue in Minneapolis.

“First Avenue is where they got their start in the ‘80s. Twenty years later they’ve got a full house,” said Steve McClellan, First Avenue bar manager.

Rahn expects the audience turnout at the Red Carpet will mirror that of First Avenue.

“We’ll get a good crowd, mainly the local college kids, and maybe some people from the Cities too,” Rahn said.

Soul Asylum manager, Jake Walesch, shares Rahn’s prediction of the audience demographic.

“I expect there will be a lot of kids from State, and some older fans as well,” Walesch said.

Practice is essential for Soul Asylum in normal concert preparations, but for the Feb. 15 show, it is even more crucial.

“The regular drummer, Ian Mussington, is in Australia getting married, so they are practicing with a new drummer,” Walesch said.

According to Walesch, Billy Thommas, who has played for Jonny Lang, will be filling in for Mussington at the Red Carpet.

After playing the Red Carpet, Soul Asylum will be doing a little touring that will take them to Iowa for a show in Cedarburg.

Soul Asylum fans who have been waiting for a new album have much to look forward to in the upcoming year.

“They are currently meeting with different labels and they should have a new record by the end of the year,” Walesch said.

Pirner will also be releasing his solo album in May.

In the meantime, Rahn welcomes all Soul Asylum fans 21 or older to the Red Carpet for what he predicts will be “a night to remember.”
