St. Cloud prepares for budget cuts

Gov. Jesse Ventura has proposed a 4.9 percent decrease in state funding to alleviate the $ 2 billion budget deficit.

For St. Cloud, this means a loss of about $ 1.5 million in state aid. The city is now faced with cutting back programs and employees from tax-supported city departments. The mayor and city council have decided to make across-the-board cuts within many departments instead of cutting large amounts from only a few departments.

Some of these cuts include laying off three firefighters, one fire marshal and two city maintenance workers, eliminating the Community Crime Impact Team and reduced funding for Paramount Arts, Symphony Orchestra and marching band among others. The most severe cuts will be made in the police, fire and public works departments.

Skateboarding park opens at YMCA

Saturday, St. Cloud residents were able to try out their skateboards at the St. Cloud Family YMCA Saturday.

The new indoor skateboarding park was created through a partnership with the city, which bought and operates the facility. Three racquetball courts at the YMCA were transformed into the skateboarding ramps. The Sunrise Kiwanis Club donated $10,000 to the construction of the park. Construction on an outdoor facility is scheduled to begin early this summer.
