More students should attend cultural nights

The issue: There were many empty seats at Saturday’s Bangladesh Night.
What we think: More students should attend cultural nights, which provide perfect opportunities for students to learn about other countries and their customs.
Many students around the world study the culture of the United States of America. They listen to American music, watch American movies, view American television programs, dance American dances, drink American soda, eat American food, purchase products from American companies and work for American companies.
Many are immersed in American culture, whether they want to be or not. Many students from other countries are required to learn the main language of the U.S. – English. Many more at least know where the U.S. is located in the world.
On the other hand, only a small percentage of U.S. citizens know a language other than English. Too many know only the culture of the U.S., while too few have traveled to foreign countries to experience the customs of other peoples.
Fortunately, at SCSU, there are many international students who work together to provide cultural nights. Each international group spends many hours planning their special night filled with ethnic music, dances, stories and food. For these students, it is a time to celebrate and remember the traditions of home. For U.S. students, it is a chance to learn.
The cultural nights provide glimpses into all areas of the globe. They allow those who attend to see and taste the differences between the U.S. and other countries. More importantly, these cultural nights show how similar are the needs of peoples around the world.
As the international students experience the American culture, they share their own traditional customs with U.S. students. Unfortunately, many U.S. students do not take the time to experience these customs.
Now that the time for cultural nights has arrived, U.S. students should attend at least one cultural night this year.
Although only a few people travel to every country in the world, it is possible to experience a large number of cultures at SCSU through the cultural nights.
One night can make a world of a difference.
