Minnesota teens smoke less often

Recent findings in the 2001 Minnesota Student Survey showed that smoking among high school seniors drooped to 34.7 percent in 2001 compared to 41.4 percent in 1998. The number of high school students who smoke in Sherburne and Stearns counties also dropped significantly.

This new survey is good news, but high schools in the area plan on getting even more aggressive with their policies against smoking. Representatives from 30 local schools, businesses and organizations will be meeting from February through December to discuss forming more consistent policies in the schools.

Students from St. John’s University and the College of St. Benedict will be conducting surveys that ask high school students in St. Cloud, Sartell and Sauk Rapids how to best stop their peers from smoking.

Shooting victim and suspect in jail

Curtis Anthony Jenkins, 44, was arrested early Tuesday morning at 700 Fifth Street in Little Falls shortly after shooting a Minneapolis man in the head. He is currently being held at the Stearns County Jail on attempted homicide charges and is expected to be sentenced on Thursday.

The victim, Cornelius Lavell Fields, 26, was also arrested because of an outstanding felony warrant after being released from St. Cloud Hospital.
