| It’s party time! Super bowl Sunday is coming, bring on the pizza, beer and Cheetos. Dance around the TV naked when your team scores a touchdown if you’re feeling extra frisky. But wait — you did that last year. This year try something new — skip the beer and pizza.
According to the National Frozen Pizza Institute, January is traditionally the highest sales month for frozen pizza, due — in large part — to home entertaining on Super Bowl Sunday. If you’re looking for a change of pace, there are many alternatives to the standard football, pizza and beer.
“I’m planning on watching the game and ordering Thai,” said senior Sommer Berg. “It’s a special occasion, so I want to get something that I really enjoy.”
Fabulousfoods.com suggests a huge round layered party sub, a pot of chili or stew, ribs or even sushi. The Web site also encourages planning food that is popular in the home state of the team you are cheering for. An easy way to entertain is to have a sandwich buffet. Put out an array of breads, meats, cheeses and sandwich fixings and let everyone help themselves.
You could put a Mexican twist on your party by laying out fajita fixings, Corona and chips served in Sombreros with guacamole and salsa.
“A Super Bowl party is what the participants make of it. There doesn’t have to be junk food and beer. Barbequed food, restaurant take-out, and soda or juice will do just fine. It’s all about cheering for your favorite team and being with friends,” said SCSU student Drew Vedbroaten.
For those who like to party, but don’t really enjoy the game, Party411.com suggests having a poll to see which player has the best beard, the best smile, the best butt, or any category of your choice. The ones who picked the most popular answer win a prize. You could also make a football pinata and fill it with prizes and candy such as chocolate covered footballs.
If you like to socialize and meet new people, Granite City is throwing its own Super Bowl party, starting at 4 p.m. They will serve an endless food buffet which includes monster sandwiches, buffalo wings and bottomless chili. Five drinks of any kind are included in the ticket price. If you can guess the final score, you’ll win $100. Granite City will also be giving away prizes including a TV, gift certificates and NFL Gear. Tickets can be purchased in advance or at the door for $25 per person.
“I plan on serving sparkling cider, a meat and cheese tray and melon balls at my Super Bowl party,” junior Joe Moleski said.
Junior Jon Kennedy says he plans to serve his famous homemade beer-cheese soup with popcorn at his party.
Of course, old habits die young... or, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks... or, you just can’t have a Super Bowl party without beer and pizza.
“Having a Super Bowl party without pizza and beer is like listening to Hall without Oates. It just doesn’t work,” says junior Justin Mofle. “I would like to get a bunch of friends together, order some pizzas and play quarters till we don’t really care who’s winning the Super Bowl.”
Fabulous Foods offers some ideas to make storing your beer on Super Bowl Sunday easy and convenient. Use your empty dishwasher or washing machine to ice down cans and bottles of drinks. When the ice melts, the water will simply drain away. Freeze empty plastic bottles and/or clean milk cartons in advance to make blocks of ice for keeping coolers cold.
