Security to be upgraded at airport

The St. Cloud Regional Airport will have new security features within the month.

Mesaba Airlines workers will staff a walk-through metal detector and baggage X-ray machines temporarily until the government hires new staff.

City Council are expected today to consider spending $29,000 to cover 10 percent of the cost to make permanent security changes at the airport.

Those changes would include walls and doors to separate the passenger boarding area from the ticketing and baggage claim section of the terminal.

Gang leader sentenced to 10 years

The Stearns County District Court sentenced a local gang leader Friday to almost 10 years for drug-related offenses.

Kenny Askew, 27, was sentenced to 98 months for selling cocaine for the benefit of a gang and 110 months for racketeering.

The sentences will run concurrently and includes the nearly one year that Askew has spent in prison since his arrest. Askew may be released within five years with good behavior.

He has already agreed to testify against as many as three co-defenders in the racketeering case, which has seen 11 people arrested.
