Professor leads health discussion

How healthy do you feel? Ever wondered and evaluated how healthy you are and you feel? How often do you take care of yourself?

Caryl Martin, a professor of health, physical education , recreation and sports studies (HPERS) at SCSU talked on this issue to the small POETS club audience gathered at Sawatdee Thai restaurant Friday. POETS stands for Professional Organized Educators of The Tri-Saints SCSU, College of St. Benedict and St. John's University.

POETS has been in existence for almost 30 years and its mailing list includes 30 couples in St. Cloud area.

Martin said that in 1994, 55 percent of people in the U.S. were suffering from obesity. It is more shocking to know that the number of obese children in the U.S. has doubled. Obese people are susceptible to a wide array of diseases like arthritis and diabetes.

"Wellness is a life long process, and doesn't end until you are dead. It is an evaluation of one self and the key to wellness is self responsible." Martin said.

Martin explained that there are six components of wellness spiritual, social, physical, environment, intellectual and emotional. The balance interplay between these components makes a healthy life.

"All the six components need to be taken well care of. If one of the areas is underserved, you are in trouble," Martin said.

Social wellness deals with active listening, community and friendship relations. Martin said spiritual wellness deals with the meaning of life and learning to tolerate other beliefs. Environmental Wellness entails protecting the environment. Emotional Wellness is reducing stress, maintaining positive self esteem and lastly, the physical wellness as nutritional habits, exercise, daily task and creativity. A person has to balance all the area.

Martin discussed stress as a personalized idea and can be treated in many different ways. Two-thirds of people suffering from depression in U.S. are women.

Hearty personality has higher resistant to the diseases, recovers from illness faster."

Martin roughly explained the differences between the 'A' personality and 'B' personality. The 'A' personality is a higher achiever and very active, while the 'B' personality is more relaxed. Martin, herself, admitted having a mixture character from both the A and B personalities.

"Today is the time to make change, direction in life, looking at changes as an opportunity to excel," she said.

Her lectures were followed by questions and answers from the small audience gathered there. The participants were each distributed with evaluation sheet of their own to fill up and see the result.

POETS invites different speakers on things that participants members are interested and want to hear about. The discussion ranges from diverse topic from time to time and lasts for just one hour. POETS meets every Friday, most of the time at Sawatdee and their events are open to everyone. However, they encourage having more of the adult, non student group of St. Cloud area. Participants just need to pay $1.50 to cover the cost of drinks, snacks and the speakers.

"It basically is a social learning group. We want to learn and enjoy life." said David Mork, a biology professor at SCSU. Mork was also in attendance for Martin's health talk.
