Northern Colorado too much for wrestlers

On paper, it looked to be a tough weekend for the SCSU wrestling squad. In reality, it turned out to be a tough weekend for the SCSU wrestling squad.

Friday night, the Huskies rolled into Greeley, Colo. for a duel versus the University of Northern Colorado Golden Bears, who were ranked 16th in the latest Division II poll.

"SCSU is tough throughout their line-up, especially in the upper weights," said UNC head coach Jack Maughan prior to Friday's contest. "SCSU defeated us last year in the dual and the conference so they have our number right now."

It appeared as if the Huskies had UNC's number yet again on Friday as they came out of the gates firing on all cylinders by winning three out of the first four matches of the evening. UNC would regroup, however, and reel off five straight wins of their own for a 21-13 victory over the visiting Huskies.

Nate Whiting, 184 lb., began the evening with an 11-5 win over Cole Allison. After a loss at the 197-lb. slot by Dan Duch, SCSU's sixth-ranked heavyweight Dustin Darveaux improved his record to 26-6 with a 10-4 victory.

Freshman 125-pounder Derek Miller then came up with a 16-6 major decision over UNC's Melvin Oliveros to give SCSU a 10-6 advantage. From there, things did not go the Huskies way as they dropped the next five matches.

Trailing 21-10, eighth ranked 197 lb. Jon Duncombe came up with a tight, 6-5 victory over UNC's Brian Hufford, enabling SCSU to end the somewhat frustrating evening on a high note.

The Huskies quickly regrouped and headed off to Omaha, Neb., Saturday evening to tackle the third ranked team in Division II, the University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Similar to Friday night, SCSU came out smoking as Darveaux improved his record to 27-6 when he posted an 8-4 win over UNO's Lance Tolstedt. However, that would be the only victory for the Huskies on the evening as UNO won in a landslide, 34-3.

Miller, Duch, Duncombe, Whiting, and John Dirksen all fell by decisions in the contest. Matt Neumueller and Paul Breth lost in major decisions, while Joe Sathre was pinned and Blake Christopherson by technical fall.

Duch and Duncombe each lost close battles by scores of 6-5 and 5-4 respectively. Whiting also wrestled a tight match, losing 7-4.

"We wrestled really hard and really well on Saturday," SCSU head coach Steve Grimit explained. "We just lost some close, hard fought matches. If we would've wrestled as good as we did on Friday night as we did Saturday, we probably would've won Friday night."

The Huskies, now 4-7, have only three matches remaining before the NCC Tournament on Feb. 24, plenty of time to continue improving.

"We did some good things over the weekend and some guys took steps in the right direction as far as being aggressive in the neutral position," Grimit noted. "We got three left before the tourney and we'd like to get them."

Next up for SCSU will be Minnesota State, Mankato Friday in Mankato.
