Both men and women track athletes competed at the Husky Open Saturday in the Halenbeck Hall Fieldhouse.

In the middle of the indoor season, the Huskies got a look to see how they matched up against the other teams in the North Central Conference (NCC). They also had the opportunity to provisionally qualify for the NCAA Division II Indoor National Championships that will take place in Boston, Mass. March 8-9.

The teams that came from the men's standings included: North Dakota State, South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota, and SCSU who finished 1-5 respectively in last years final NCC standings.

Showing up from the women's side were North Dakota State, South Dakota and South Dakota State who all finished ahead of the 7th place Huskies.

Among the Huskies that met the requirements for the National Championships include junior high jumper Stacey Baumbach with a leap of 5'6", which also nailed her a second place finish at the meet.

Senior Eric Gunderson improved on his already provisional mark in the shot put as he measured a throw of 54' 3 1/4" that also landed him a second place finish. Gunderson had another second place in the weight throw with a distance of 55' 2 1/2". Another senior, Jed Bergstrom, finished a strong 3rd place in the pole vault as he qualified for Nationals by springing himself up over 15'7" in the pole vault.

Also having a strong meet for the women was Amy Dombrovski, who finished fourth in the 500 meter dash (1:23.22) despite being hampered with a knee injury. In one of the quickest events of the meet, Stacey Trushenski (8.58) and Danielle Simons (8.62) recorded the Huskies a second and third place finish in the 55 meter hurdles.

For the men's team finishing second in the long jump was St. Cloud-native senior Peter Lucca with a jump of 22' 1 3/4". Adding a couple third place finishes to their resume included Justin Antus in the 500 meter dash (1:05.96) and Kevin Holubar with a 49' 7 3/4" toss in the weight throw.

"Our team is improving every practice and is showing that in the meets. Everyone is working hard and wants to get better every time out," said junior long jumper Jake Marcott.

Bothered by a sore hamstring was senior Blake King, who was still able to finish fourth in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.77.

Blake was not the only injured athlete among the Husky team. Short distance sprinters junior Jonny Olson (hamstring) and sophomore Brian Sebera (ankle) did not compete this weekend. For the women's team, senior Andrea Dobmeir and sophomore Amy Harris were both out due to stress fractures.

"Our team has a few injuries, but it is still early in the season with plenty of time to get healthy," said Jonny Olson. "With Blake running again in the 200, the rest of us are looking forward to competing again."

The Huskies travel to UW-Stout next Saturday for their next meet, but will return home the following week to host the SCSU open Feb. 16 at 1 p.m.
