Terrio Band to rock Carpet
For long-time musician Mike Terrio, things have gone pretty well; starting in the first grade, he's always been into something music-related.
Things continue to progress smoothly. Thursday night at 10 p.m., Mike and his Minneapolis-based band Terrio Band are scheduled to play at the Red Carpet Night Club. It's not unlikely that the show will be a success.
Terrio's success proceeds. Terrio Band, who have been together for close to two years now, released a solo album in August of 2001. It can be found at any Cheapo, Electric Fetus or on their Web site, miketerrio.com.
The band is an all-star lineup comprised of drummer Michael Bland of Prince and the New Power Generation and ace guitarist Patrik Tanner of Tina and the B-Sides and Martin Zellar.
"The harder we work, the luckier we get," said Terrio of his band's fortune.
However, Terrio has worked ceaselessly to come this far. Since grade school, he has worked in musicals, and in 1998, he and some friends formed a group called Self Addressed. After being together for two-and-a-half years, the band decided to call it quits when they began to digress in separate directions.
Whether working on a solo project or jamming with a crew, Terrio proceeds to express himself through music, which is what he does best.
"I want something that can actually affect people emotionally," Terrio said of his prominent expression.
For Joe Birchhill, long-time friend and manager of booking agency Full Tank Productions, Terrio's work definitely moved him.
"First time I saw Terrio, he was playing with his then-band Self Addressed, at a bar in Minnetonka. That was the reason I wanted to work with him; I saw how he had a strong drive to entertain his fans and succeed in his business. It just moved me to work with him," Birchhill said.
Since then, Terrio Band has played all over the mid-west, including Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois and Colorado. The venues they most commonly play are bars, nightclubs and scenes of the like. The Red Carpet is actually their favorite place to play.
"Out of all the bars, (the Red Carpet) get the best music. I think that people today know quality music," Terrio said.
The kind of music they play can be described as "rootsy pop/rock with soul influence," Terrio said. Their wide range of influences include Lenny Kravitz, James Taylor, Counting Crows, Dave Matthews Band and Marvin Gaye.
"It's kind of a mutant of all the genres," Terrio said.
Whether melting genres with his bandmates or going to school at the University of Minnesota to finish his speech communication and deaf studies degree, he can say one thing is for sure: his music career will not stop here.
"I started music at a very young age. It's just something I can't see myself not doing," Terrio said. "Things are really starting to look up. I've got a really good team, and we're excited. We just work great together."
