President encourages lobby trip

As this especially critical session of the Minnesota Legislature gets underway, I am encouraging all members of our campus community to communicate with their state representatives. For students, an ideal way to do this is to take part in Student Lobby Day on Wednesday, Feb. 13. A march will be organized at St. Paul Technical College, 235 Marshall Ave., St Paul, at 1 p.m., and students will have the opportunity to rally on the steps of the State Capitol and to meet with legislators throughout the day. Transportation will be available from SCSU Student Government Office, (320) 255-3751.

This year our state lawmakers are facing an economic downturn as well as upcoming elections, and they will be listening more than ever to constituents as they consider how to make up for a projected $2 billion revenue shortfall. A good turnout on Student Lobby Day could have a significant impact on their decisions, since legislators are well aware that students ARE the future of Minnesota. They also realize that a well educated workforce is the key to a steady economy in the future. They should hear from students before making decisions that could lead to cuts in financial aid and further increases in tuition.

There's a lot of talk these days about freedom and the American way of life. We have been reminded by recent events that we cannot take these privileges for granted. Taking an active role in the democratic process by voting and communicating with elected officials is the best way to ensure that your opinions and your priorities will get a fair hearing.

For more information about legislative issues and Student Lobby Day, please refer to the brochure that is available at most campus offices or the Minnesota State University Student Association website at www.msusa.net.
