Students should attend Lobby Day
University Chronicle
EDITORIAL BOARD
The issue: The annual Lobby Day will be held Wednesday at the State Capitol in St. Paul.
What we think: SCSU students should attend to make sure that their voices are heard.
Wednesday is MnSCU's 2002 Student Lobby Day. It is a chance for students to visit St. Paul and let their elected officials know what is concerning them.
This year, students, maybe more then ever, need to take advantage of this day to let politicians know that the way they have been treating higher education in this state for the last couple of years is not OK.
SCSU students are facing a 13 percent tuition hike, a four percent hike in room and board on campus and an increase in student fees, due to the levy that was passed last semester.
Much of the blame for the tuition hikes can go squarely on the shoulders of Gov. Jesse Ventura and the Minnesota Legislature who have left public college students out in the cold.
Wednesday provides a chance for students to put their foot down and let officials know enough is enough. The more students who attend, the stronger the message will be.
Students will march at 1 p.m. from the St. Paul Technical College to the Minnesota State Capitol building, where a rally will be held.
After the rally, students will have the opportunity to meet with legislators individually and make clear the issues than concern them the most.
Students who are interested in helping stop the inflating prices of a college education should contact the SCSU Student Government (255-3751), who are providing transportation to and from the rally.
Students should also take time to speak to their individual representatives while in St. Paul.
Senator Dave Kleis and Representative Joe Opatz represent the SCSU campus area.
