UPB brings back Winter Week
During the blustery winter season, whether it be mild or harsh, everyone needs an effective pick-me-up to cure the winter blues.
University Program Board decided that they would do just that and more for students by bringing back winter week.
Winter Week, which has a different theme every year, with this year's theme as "Snowdaze," is something to "get people out of the rut of winter and get people involved," said UPB member Shelby Kitzman.
It's basically a week comprised of many activities and events as an alternative to the daily grind to which many individuals attend.
Snowdaze starts Monday at noon, and is kicked off with something called the Ultimate Psychic Fair. Taking place in the Atwood Lounge, it will feature tarot card readings, palm readings, numerology and imaging aura system.
There will be a hypnotist at 7 p.m. in the Ritsche Auditorium.
Tuesday there will be Big Chair Photos, which is a photo shoot that makes every person look miniature. This includes free hot chocolate. Later that day there will be fire and ice jugglers, and a presentation by the National Black Touring Circuit in the Ritsche Auditorium.
Wednesday is Stress Relief Day, where there will be massages, stress balls and other activities. Free Eastman workouts and root beer floats are available all day long. At night there will be karaoke, held in the Atwood Quarry.
Thursday there will be Valentine card-making, as well as something called "What's in a Name?" that offers posters with colorful and lively designs behind the meaning and origin of any name, no matter the originality or nationality.
Later that day the film "Serendipity" will be shown in the Atwood Theatre.
Friday is the only day that activities are not free, and this is because the only activity is a ski trip to Powder Ridge. It lasts from three to eight p.m. and costs $12 to ski and $14 to snowboard. Students must sign up by four p.m. Feb. 8 in Atwood 118.
Unfortunately, these week-long events were put in abeyance for three years. During the years that Winter Week was once held, this was a week that re-rendered homecoming week, with candidates for the queen and king. Students would then vote for them, much like homecoming week.
To differentiate from homecoming week and to coincide with the theme for Winter Week, these candidates were called Jack Frost and Jane Frost. By 1999, however, they realized that this was not something that was possible anymore, as it became harder and harder to find people who wanted to be candidates.
Eventually, Jack and Jane Frost were discontinued and was replaced by other activities in which students could be involved.
"We feel we can bring it back into full force and start our own traditions," said UPB member Kim Bruemmer.
Special events coordinator Marla Moore had to concur. "We're hoping to make it an annual tradition."
"There are a lot of fun events," said UPB office manager Irene Bruemmer. "I hope students will attend."
