Slobodan Milosevic put on trial
The first trial in history against a head of state for international war crimes entered its first day Tuesday in The Hague, Netherlands.
The trial began with the U.N. attorneys presenting their case against Milosevic. They talked about the complex web of crimes committed over nearly a decade in Bosnia, Croatia and Kosovo. Prosecutors stated that the reason for the crimes was not ideology or racism but a desire to hold on to power at any cost.
Milosevic, 60, faces 66 counts of genocide and other war crimes that killed thousands of people in the three countries. Each count carries a maximum sentence of life in prison.
U.S. women having more babies
American women are having more children now than they have in the past 30 years.
Encouraged by a decade long economic boom, U.S. women are having at least 2.1 children in an average lifetime, the government said. This is the first time since 1971 that the number of children born has offset the number of deaths.
According to the latest statistics, there were 4,058,814 births in 2000. That is up 2.5 percent from the 1999 figure. It was also the first time since 1993 that the number of births topped 4,000,000.
