| A blue kangaroo and a luxury coach bus attracted students to the Glacier Room in Atwood Memorial Center Monday as an SCSU student organization held an event for a national competition.
Eleven of the 45 members of SCSU's Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) chapter chose to compete in the 2002 Bateman Case Study Competition. This is a national public relations competition case study organized by the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA). The competition is currently being carried out across the country against various PRSSA university chapters.
The case study's client is Contiki Holidays, a household name through Europe and Australia for traveling via motor coach. Contiki takes a unique approach by only targeting people between the ages of 18 and 35. Adding to this theme, the slogan for Monday's PRSSA event was "What Happens on the Bus, Stays on the Bus."
On Monday, a Schmitty & Sons tour bus was parked on the Atwood Mall for four hours starting at 10 a.m. PRSSA members attempted to get people to go up to the Glacier Room in Atwood where individuals would get their chance to gather traveling tips and ideas from Marshall Field's Travel, Bursch Travel, the Travel and Tourism Club and the Center for International Studies.
"This was a very successful event with almost 80 people showing up in the Glacier Room," said Jeff Opp, the PRSSA president. "We owe much of the success to hard work and the many sponsors who provided incentives to draw people to the Glacier Room."
The local businesses who sponsored the event included Bernick's Pepsi, Hemsing Deli, Campus Book and Supply, Ocean Breeze Tanning, Soleil Bronze Tanning Spa, Panache Salon and Day Spa, Caribou Coffee, Papa John's Pizza, Ciatti's Italian Restaurant, Gloria Jeans and TCF Bank. A drawing was held to give prizes to the students who participated.
This is the second consecutive year the PRSSA chapter has participated in the Bateman Competition. They placed considerably well among the national competition last year. The top three teams chosen in early May go to Hawaii for the finals.
Although the SCSU chapter has not yet gone to Hawaii, they did get an Honorable Mention by placing within the top 10 teams in last year's competition. The team has high hopes again this year as their statistics and results have improved from last year.
"We learned just how much we could accomplish with hard work last year," Opp said. "Now that we have experience on our side we are looking to improve our campaign considerably."
"Because of our success last year, we have better attendance and participation among members, which leads to fresh and exciting ideas for the competition," said Janet Peterson, a second-year participant and the co-chair of the team.
The Bateman team will submit a booklet outlining their public relations campaign for Contiki Tours along with an interactive CD-Rom to the judges of the competition.
"It takes a tremendous amount of cooperation between the Bateman members and the campus community to make this campaign successful," Opp said.
The members of the Bateman team would like to extend a thanks to all students and faculty who participated in the event on Monday, which significantly helped improve PRSSA's chances of going to Hawaii for the finals later this year.
