GLBT Services plans events for Out Proud Week
The SCSU Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Services will be hosting the "Out Proud Week 2002" from Feb. 25 to March 2.
The GLBT Services has planned a series of events in connection with the Out Proud Week, amongst which the performance by nationally known lesbian comedian Kate Clinton will be a special attraction.
Clinton will be speaking about political issues in Kimberly A. Ritsche Auditorium Feb. 28 at 7 p.m.
"People from all over Minnesota are coming to see her," said Sheri Atkinson, coordinator of GLBT. "I hope people get something out of her performance besides comedy."
Atkinson is also the advisor to Outloud, an organization that was set up to educate SCSU students and community members about homophobia and heterosexism.
Out Proud Week will also see a couple of brown bag lunch discussions by faculty and staff of SCSU on various GLBT issues, where all are invited to participate.
Students of SCSU are also organizing workshops on gender expression, civil rights and heteroflexibility.
Maren Gerithouse, an SCSU senior and GLBT Services' activist chair, is coordinating the "Heteroflexible to Bisexual: The Spectrum" event.
"People can come and explore their sexuality with this event without giving out what sexuality they are," Gerithouse said. "Most people want to leave it as a private issue."
People can also participate in the sensitivity training sessions, such as Safe Space Training (how to make the spaces in which people live safe, in cases of GLBT), Homophobia 101 and how to make your environment GLBT friendly.
Heidi Aldes, SCSU senior and GLBT Services' education chair, is coordinating Homophobia 101.
"This presentation talks about heterosexual privileges, religion, hate crimes, stereotypes, definitions and GLBT history," Aldes said. "I hope people will get something out of it."
The ever-popular Drag Show will also be featured as part of Out Proud 2002 but will be held on two nights due to space unavailability, Feb. 29 and 30 in the Atwood Quarry at 8 p.m.
"It is a student-run, produced show where students lip-sync to a song," Atkinson said. "It gives them a chance to express themselves."
Money made from the show goes to a research fund for meningitis, an illness in which inflammation of the tissues covers the brain and spinal cord. Viral or aseptic meningitis, which is the most common type, is caused by an infection with one of several types of viruses. Meningitis can also be caused by infections with several types of bacteria or fungi.
"One of the members of the drag show had lost his younger brother to meningitis, so that is why we are donating our money to that research fund," Atkinson said.
Tickets for the Drag Show and for Kate Clinton are available at the GLBT Services office and at the Atwood Information Desk.
"This year's Out Proud Week is full of exciting educational opportunities and events designed to appeal to all students," Atkinson said. "We hope to see a lot of people there."
