Broken pole causes power outage

More than 3,500 St. Cloud residents lost power Wednesday night when a power pole snapped near Cathedral High School, Sixth Avenue North.

The outage occurred around 7:20 p.m. when the top 5 to 6 feet of the pole broke off and fell onto the power lines strung below. It eventually fell to the ground when the lines gave way.

Witnesses to the incident report seeing green and blue flashes of light after the pole snapped and then heard the buzzing and sizzling of electricity.

The power outage affected the areas of 33rd Avenue North to the Mississippi River and between 12th Street North and Fifth Street North. Electricity was restored by Xcel Energy around 9 p.m. to all but 12 residents. Officials have yet to find out what caused the pole to snap.

St. Cloud man charged with assault

Larry Blais, 58, of East St. Cloud was charged with assault on Tuesday after stabbing his roommate.

Police determined that Donald Vogel had been sleeping in his bed when Blais came home from the bar and stabbed him in the head and face with a screwdriver. The door to their residence in the Cloverleaf Trailer Park had been locked. Blais had to pry the door open to get inside. The incident occurred around 7:45 p.m. on Sunday. Vogel is listed in good condition at the St. Cloud Hospital.
