PSD's 'Night Walk' to make comeback
By Geoff Higgins/Contributing Writer
SCSU's Public Safety Department will hold its first night walk campus tour in four years Monday, to help survey safety issues and concerns around campus.
The last time they held a night walk was in October, 1998, when the SCSU campus had a much different look to it. Public Safety officials hope to get some ideas from students, administration, community leaders and faculty members to help get another perspective on safety issues on campus.
"We want to address these safety issues collectively with other members of SCSU to help us understand what we need to improve on," said Miles Heckendorn, director of Public Safety Department.
The tour will begin with a meeting in the South Voyageur room in Atwood Memorial Center at 6 p.m. to go over the mission and goals of the night walk. Those attending will be assigned to groups of about 12 to 15 people.
Each group will consist of students, administration and faculty members. A public safety officer will accompany each group to answer questions and concerns a group might have. The department has split the campus up into four sections, with each group only looking at one section.
The public safety officer accompanying each group will point out the placement of campus lighting, pedestrian traffic areas and emergency blue light phones. The placement of shrubbery and trees is another concern that will be taken into consideration.
The newest concerns, however, are Stateview Apartments, which will become a part of campus housing for students this fall, and the Miller Learning Resources Center, which is the most recent major addition to the campus. The groups that tour these areas will be asked to help give ideas that might help safety developments.
"It helps us to have more eyes looking at these areas to help us document our concerns about safety," said Ferman Woodberry, the department's security coordinator.
Once the tours are completed, all of the groups will return to South Voyageur room to hear each group review their assigned section. The evening will come to a close with the making of a security issues master list that will be used by Public Safety to make security adjustments in each section of campus.
Students are encouraged to attend the night walk to have a closer look at safety issues on campus and build better communications between Public Safety and SCSU students.
"This is an opportunity for Public Safety to enhance communication and share knowledge with students all at the same time," Heckendorn said. "We want to continue to heighten the safety issues on campus."
And Public Safety officials look at the night walk as a way for students to get to know the people that organize all aspects of campus, not just the safety.
"The night walk gives all departments of SCSU a chance to hear concerns from students first hand," Woodberry said. "This is a tool for us to help update ourselves, so we can alleviate problems."
Students interested in taking part in the night walk are asked to contact Public Safety so that they can be placed in a group for the tour.
