Intramurals let everyone get in the game

Are you sick of being cooped up inside all winter?

Are you getting spring fever? Campus Recreation Center has just what you need, with a whole mirage of new spring intramural sports. They have intramurals for everyone ranging from a whiffleball tournament to a basketball tournament and even a cribbage tourney for those who wish to use their brains instead of their brawn.

Campus Rec is even hosting an extramural hockey tournament this weekend at the National Hockey Center. Eleven of the best intramural hockey teams from area colleges and universities will compete starting at 7 p.m. Friday, and running the entire weekend with all the action culminating in the championship game at 2:45 p.m. Sunday. Some of the colleges and universities that participate in this event are the University of Minnesota, the two-year defending champion Bemidji State team, and even small community colleges such as Anoka-Ramsey and Normandale Community College.

What about those who can't skate? Campus Rec has a solution for that with the ever-popular boot hockey league. Although the league is already in progress, students can still come down and watch the league's playoffs next week, and scope out the competition for next year's season.

Some of the events that are starting up at Campus Rec within the next few weeks are the badminton singles tournament, the racquetball league, the badminton league, and an ice hockey league. All entries for these activities must be in by next week with play starting as soon as next week and going into March.

Entry forms for any intramural sports can be picked up down at the Campus Rec office, which is located in Halenbeck Hall, or some forms and other Campus Rec information, such as dates, times, and leagues can be found online at www.stcloudstate.edu/~recsport or you can call them at (320) 255-3325. With over one-third of the student body participating in intramurals, why not sign up for an event?

There are no fees for these events, which is a rarity among college intramurals. According to Butch Fealy, who is the Coordinator of Intramurals at Campus Rec, most colleges and universities charge anywhere from $80-$100 a team to participate in various intramural sports. Here at St. Cloud State, though, intramurals are completely free. There is, however, a $20 completely refundable forfeit deposit for games you don't show up for, but with how much fun intramurals can be you wouldn't want to miss a single competition.

"(Intramurals) provide something for anybody, and you can compete at any level," Fealy said. "As you get older, opportunities (in sports) get few and far between."

So why don't you get off your can, brush off your sneakers and get involved with any of the various intramural sports this spring at SCSU? They really do have something for everybody.
