Wayzata man to buy Fingerhut
One of St. Cloud's largest and most prominent businesses, Fingerhut Companies Inc., received the announcement Thursday that Peter Lytle, of Business Development Group Acquisitions Inc., had signed a letter of intent to buy the company and keep it from closing.
The potential buyer, a Wayzata businessman, said Friday that his group is looking at a smaller but whole version of the company. Lytle emphasized the significance of St. Cloud's Fingerhut operations.
Fingerhut's parent company, Cincinnati-based Federated Department Stores Inc. announced Jan. 16 that it planned to shut down Fingerhut and eliminate 6,000 jobs nationally, 4,700 of them in Minnesota and about 2,700 in St. Cloud. The company said that it had tried but failed to find potential buyers. It also said it believed it was unlikely a buyer could be found.
Senator Wellstone says he has MS
U.S. Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., said Sunday that he has a mild form of multiple sclerosis, a progressive disease of the central nervous system.
Although the disease has affected his lower right leg, Wellstone, 57, said he is in no pain and intends to run for a third Senate term. He suffers from primary progressive MS, a type that is characterized by slow progression with no flare-ups but also no remissions. There is no known treatment and no cure for primary progressive multiple sclerosis, although there are clinical trials involving certain drugs.
