Canada earns gold in Olympic hockey
Canada ended its 50-year wait to win the Olympic gold medal in its national sport, beating the United States as Jerome Iginla and Joe Sakic each scored twice in a historic 5-2 victory Sunday in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The loss ended U.S. coach Herb Brooks' quest to lead a second gold-medal winning team 22 years after "Miracle on Ice" with a mostly unknown collegiate team. The loss also ended the United States' 70-year winning streak on Olympic home ice.
Sunday also marked the closing ceremony of the 2002 Olympics.
U.S. reporter confirmed dead
Federal law enforcement officials announced the death of kidnapped Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl Thursday. The officials learned of the death of the Princeton, N.J., native from a video tape from Pakistan.
Fahad Naseem, an Islamic militant charged in the kidnapping, is reported saying that Pearl was seized because he was "anti-Islam and a Jew." Pakistani authorities have arrested some suspects in the case, including Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, an Islamic extremist. Sheikh is reported saying that he helped kidnap Pearl to protest Pakistan's partnership with the U.S.
Pearl's wife, Mariane, is a French journalist. She is seven months pregnant with the couple's first child.
