Grant writing training available

The Central Minnesota Community Foundation, in partnership with the SCSU Center for Continuing Studies, will hold two new training opportunities on grant writing.

"With our grant writings workshops, the participants will learn what grant funds are available so that they can apply for them," said Susan Lorenz, program officer. "Right now, the Central Minnesota Community Foundation and United Way has grant funds available.

"These classes are important because it will secure more money for the organizations if they apply. More knowledge is always better than less, therefore you can support your organizations. There are over 800 organizations in Minnesota alone."

The first session, Grant Writing I: "The Basics" is being offered Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whitney Senior Center in St. Cloud.

Participants will examine who has the funds, what they want and how to give them what they want, while at the same time increasing your funding results. Several grant writing professionals will present information on grant writing and the grant process.

Some of the speakers include Dick Grabko, community developer; Betty Schmettler, Central Minnesota United Way; Kathy Dahlberg, District 742; and Kathy Grochow and Karen Starr, Auto Bremer Foundation.

This workshop will be of special interest to groups from education, city and county government, human services, youth organizations and community groups.

Some of the topics the workshop will address include: How to Find Funders, How Foundations Work, Municipal Project Financing, Federated Giving Programs and Tips & Ideas on Grants.

The second session, Grant Writing II: "The Advanced" is being offered May 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Whitney Center. This workshop is designed to concentrate on the various components of a grant, including project design, budget creation and preparing the narrative with goals and objectives.

The workshop is also designed to teach participants how to deal with grant funders (foundations, corporations, government agencies, etc.) and what they want.

By that time participants should have narrowed their grant search to a few funders and, if possible, should bring grant materials with them. For those who haven't gotten to the point of selecting a funder, a sample grant will be created from a standard funding form.

Near the end of the session, professionals will discuss how the project will be implemented and completed once you receive the grant.

For both classes, Greg Reigstad, executive director of First Call for Help, will be leading a group of knowledgeable grant writing professionals.

Reigstad has been active in non-profit management, including service on over 16 nonprofit governing boards. He has worked as a grants administrator for nine years and as the executive director for 10 years. He has written grants to numerous foundations, corporations and to both the state and federal levels of government.

"These courses are for credit for undergraduate and graduate courses," Reigstad said. "There was a need in St. Cloud for approaching grants, so that is why I am teaching them.

"I'm looking forward to teaching the second class more than the first one. I am more of a facilitator in the first class and the second one is much more hands-on and I enjoy that more."

Workshop registration forms are available from SCSU and the CMCF.
