Additional sales tax considered
St. Cloud city leaders met Wednesday to discuss how they will finance the expansion of the St. Cloud Civic Center and a new library.
A proposal had been made previously to induce a food and beverage sales tax. It was voted down at the meeting because it was found that revenues would not be sufficient. Imposing some sort of sales tax on the community will likely be the outcome of their discussions, however.
City officials have been favoring the idea of an eight-year, half-cent sales tax. There is also talk of cutting down the term to three years but raising the tax. It is not clear yet which plan will be implemented. It is estimated that the city needs $45 million for the civic center and $25 million for the library.
Local man gets 12 years for incest
Harold Eugene Beals, 44, was sentenced in Benton County District Court to 12 years in prison Tuesday for sexually abusing his two granddaughters, ages 2 and 6.
Beals was charged with and plead guilty to one count of criminal sexual misconduct. He could have been sentenced for three other similar counts but a deal was struck between prosecutors and Beals' public defender.
According to court reports, the abuse included tying the girls up while performing sexual acts and forcing the girls to perform acts on each other while he watched.
