The issue: The Public Safety Department held its Nightwalk Monday to help address security issues on the SCSU campus.
What we think: PSD needs to continue to work with the SCSU community to make sure all safety concerns are addressed.

Around 40 people participated in Nightwalk, which was presented by the SCSU Public Safety Department Monday night. The Nightwalk before Monday's took place in 1998. The department tries to hold the event once every three years.

The purpose of Nightwalk was to examine the exterior safety needs of the SCSU campus. The group found that more lights and blue lights are needed. Better handicap parking spots and slower speeds on the side streets were also recommended.

With the campus of SCSU expanding, both in numbers and in area, it is important that all SCSU community members be assured of safety.
Nightwalk gave PSD an opportunity to show off the other services it provides SCSU.

Many students only think of PSD officers as people who give tickets and put auto clamps on vehicles. While parking control is a major function of PSD, it are also there to serve SCSU in many other capacities.
PSD started jump starting vehicles in 1999 and since then its officers have attempted to jump start 1,824 student vehicles. PSD has also provided 10,898 vehicle or walking escorts to students in the last four years.

Students should realize that PSD can help them more than they may think. If students are more willing to utilize the services provided by PSD, their perspective of the department may change to being more positive.

PSD must also try to be more visible and accessible in dangerous areas on campus. The Husky Shuttle runs only every 20 minutes at night, leaving students waiting in Q-lot literally in the dark for too long. PSD needs to be in the area more often to ensure that students waiting for the next bus are safe.

Nightwalk was a way for PSD to show that they want to work with the community and figure out ways to better serve SCSU.
Because of that, they are already ahead of the curve.
