Kate Clinton to headline Out Proud Week
In honor of GLBT Services' eventful week of programs and shows pertaining to issues in the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender community, the organization is proud to bring Kate Clinton to SCSU.
Besides speaking at various theaters and conferences all over the country, Kate Clinton is a very busy woman.
A humorist and monologist, Clinton wrote her first book, Don't Get Me Started, in 1998. She has, since then, proceeded to further her repertoire by writing for various publications including George and the New York Times, as well as for "The Rosie O'Donnell Show."
Since 1993, Clinton has also appeared in various one-woman comedy shows across the country. In 1999, Clinton premiered off-Broadway at the Westbeth Theatre Center.
Clinton touches on a range of subjects from life as a lesbian, family relationships, and even politics. Either way, she illuminates any situation with her unique and savvy point of view.
In addition to being an actress, humorist, panelist and writer, Clinton also has six comedy albums added to her credit. Among them are Babes in Joyland, and her latest effort, Read These Lips.
Starting as an English teacher, Clinton moved from the classroom to various places to work with several comedians, writers and various other celebrities including Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Tracey Ullman, Sharon Stone and Richard Pryor.
She also performed at last year's Valentine's Day celebration of "The Vagina Monologues." The sold-out show was held at Madison Square Garden to benefit the fight for violence against women.
Now, with nearly 21 years of experience in several fields, Clinton is currently working on a second book, with the working title Kate Clinton: Collected Speeches [I Never Gave]. She is also the subject of a currently-filming retrospective of her career.
So it's very clear why it's such an event to have such an honorable woman coming to SCSU to speak. Many are expecting a very good response.
"I think (people) will be fascinated by her," said Out Loud education chair Heidi Aldes. "(They'll) learn a lot while laughing, which is awesome."
GLBT Services Coordinator Sheri Atkinson agrees. "People should expect to have a good time, laugh a lot and get a different perspective."
GLBT Services has worked quite hard through fundraising and other events to get this high-demand speaker to come to our campus. Tickets to her shows would normally start at $20 and elevate from there. The tickets to this show are going to be only $5 with an SCSU ID, and $8 to the public. But price is not an issue; it's important to them that they get the right message across.
"All events we have at all times, we encourage allies to come," Atkinson said.
And the rest of the public are encouraged to come, as well. Flyers and word-of-mouth have encouraged anyone to come and enjoy the entire experience.
"As a political comedian, (Clinton) takes issues and expresses the injustices in them," is how Aldes described the deliverance of Clinton's humor.
Atkinson agreed.
"(She) makes light of things in a funny context."
