Ellenbecker, Saigo discuss diversity

St. Cloud Mayor John Ellenbecker and SCSU President Roy Saigo met recently to talk about how to bring more diversity and positive attitudes to the city of St. Cloud.

This meeting came about as a response to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission's report on SCSU stating that the school needed to change it's atmosphere regarding race issues. Both men agree that the change needs to start with the city as a whole.

Some ideas that are being considered include boosting the number of minorities that are employed by the St. Cloud Police Department and offering diversity training classes for city employees at SCSU.

Elections begin with precinct caucuses

The precinct caucus meetings for all political parties will begin Tuesday night at 7 p.m.

The caucuses serve as a starting point to discuss major issues and candidates during an election year. This year, Minnesotans will be voting for a new governor among other open positions.

In past years, attendance has been declining at precinct caucuses. Only about 3 percent of registered voters show up for the event.

This year political leaders are hopeful that the growing concern about such things as national security and the sluggish economy will increase interest in the meetings.
