Soul Asylum to return
By Staff Report
Minnesota natives Soul Asylum will be gracing the stage of St. Cloud's own Red Carpet again April 5.
The show is the second for the band, which first played at the downtown nightclub Feb. 15.
Troy Rahn, manager of the Red Carpet, said the band decided to add a second show when they saw the audience and town's response to February's show, which sold out.
"They loved the audience," Rahn said. "They loved the atmosphere."
Rahn explained that typically when a band sells out a show, they look to adding a second performance. And that was just the case for Soul Asylum.
The second show is usually scheduled as close to the original performance date as possible. However, Soul Asylum's second show is scheduled more than a month away due to conflicts of availability between the band and the venue.
Rahn said part of the reason the band scheduled another show is because they wanted to make sure everyone who wanted to see them had a chance.
The band was formed in 1981 in Minneapolis by Dave Pirner, Karl Mueller and Dan Murphy. Pat Morley joined the band soon after, but in 1983, Morley left and Grant Young joined. That same year, Soul Asylum was signed to Minneapolis' Twin/Tone Records and released "Say What You Will."
While jumping around between music labels, Soul Asylum released several other albums, including 1990's "And the Horse They Rode In On."
Soul Asylum broke onto the national music scene in 1992 when the band released the Columbia Records-produced album "Grave Dancers Union," which spawned "Someone to Shove," "Black Gold" and the radio and video hit "Runaway Train." From then on out, the Minnesota boys' careers were like a runaway train. Their CD titled "Grave Dancer's Union" sold more than 4 million copies.
The band still faced changes and Young was replaced with Sterling Campbell. The new make-up released 1995's "Let Your Dim Light Shine," which reached No. 6 on the charts and received good reviews.
