Minorities get low-quality health care
A study that was released by the Institute of Medicine on Wednesday showed that many minorities in the United States receive lower-quality health care than whites.
This recent report stated that minorities are less likely to receive appropriate heart medicine, undergo bypass surgery or receive kidney dialysis and transplants. It also found disparities in the quality of cancer treatment and minorities often do not receive the newest treatments for AIDS.
A committee set up by the institute made several recommendations in order to reduce these differences. They include changing health insurance programs, setting up education programs for health care providers and recruiting more minorities into the health care field.
Ohio teenager killed by hockey puck
A Columbus Blue Jackets game was supposed to be an early 14th birthday present for Brittanie Cecil, from West Alexandria, Ohio, but the happy ending turned deadly.
Cecil died at a hospital in Columbus Monday, two days after the game, from a damaged artery and brain swelling caused by a hockey puck that struck her in the forehead. The same puck struck two other people but they were treated at the arena's first aid station.
She was the first spectator to die from such an injury sustained at a National Hockey League game.
