Take Back the Night calls for T-Shirt designs

The Women's Center invites students, adults and children to show violence is never in fashion by participating in the annual "Take Back the Night" T-shirt contest.

According to Sexual Assault Prevention Coordinator Lee LaDue, this is the second year for the T-shirt contest and the first year featuring a category for children.

"I really liked the committee's decision to include a children's submission for the contest because 'Take Back the Night' really is a family-oriented event," LaDue said.

"Take Back the Night" has been a part of campus-wide spring activities for the past 12 years and has been celebrated in different parts of Minnesota even longer.

"The program stands for an end to violence so that we may all 'take back the night' or walk in the dark freely without fear," Community of Color Advocate Yasuko Kamada said.

In the past, the "Take Back the Night" committee has selected people to design the shirts based on recommendations by friends and family, but the interactive contest is an enthusiastically supported alternative.

"It's great," LaDue said. "The best part about the contest is that it involves the whole community, and this event is for the whole community," LaDue said.

Anyone can join the contest by picking up an application form at the Women's Center on campus, Central Minnesota Sexual Assault Center, Boys and Girls Club or the Girl Scouts of America. Submissions should be on white paper and, preferably, in black and white.

"They can design a logo, like a picture of some kind or if they want to use a special font from their computer for the words 'Take Back the Night' they can do that, too," Kamada said.

The 15 "Take Back the Night" committee members will judge the submissions, and there are only a few rules for participants.

"The design has to be your own and not made on a computer. It has to be a new design, not one that was already used on other shirts," Kamada said.

Participants age 16 and older will be considered for the adult category. Those participants age 15 and younger, will be considered for the children's category. In addition to a free shirt for winners in both divisions, the winner from the adult category will receive $50 award and the winner from the children's category will receive a $25 award as well as a $25 gift certificate.

"We hope to announce the winners the first week in April," LaDue said.

According to LaDue, the shirts which will be available in short sleeve, long sleeve and possibly tank tops will be available for purchase a week before the "Take Back the Night Rally" at kiosks in Atwood. Prices for the shirts are not yet determined.

"The cost will really depend on how much different colored ink we need and what the design is like," LaDue said. "We'd like to keep them affordable, around $12 to 15, but it will depend on how much they cost to make."

Last year the Women's Center made $3 to 4 on the shirts sold. All the profits pay for "Take Back the Night," which is, according to LaDue, an important event to have.

"Families and kids come and it gives children a chance to understand that violence does exist in the world, but there are adults in their own community who are working to change that," LaDue said.

Contest applications must be submitted by March 29 to the Women's Center or mailed to: TBTN Logo Design Committee, SCSU Women's Center, 720 Fourth Ave. S., St. Cloud, Minn. 56301
