Just war
I am writing in response to Tim O'Keenan's March 4 letter. First, the United States government did have clear proof that bin Laden was behind the attacks. I am sorry if U.S. intelligence did not e-mail you a copy of the proof or went on CNN and told the whole world how we came to our conclusion. Giving away our proof to everyone would compromise our security.
Unlike you, I do not believe the Taliban would ever hand over bin Laden. We are talking about the Taliban here, not the government of Canada. The Taliban beat and rape their women, murder their own people, destroyed Afghanistan's educational system, and harbor known terrorists. Also, our military objective is not to find bin Laden. Don't get me wrong, we want to find the coward, but our military objective is to stop al Qaeda from training, planning, and executing more attacks on the free society of the world.
Please do not write in to our paper talking about our government killing innocent people. Your article fails to mention the 2,900 killed at the WTC. Do you care more about other innocent people killed than your own countrymen? I sure hope not. I do not want to see innocent people die no matter who they are or where they are from. You must remember that the innocent Afghans killed are not our targets. Every war has innocent people who are killed but it's not the goal of the American government to kill the innocent.
It makes me embarrassed that there are people in this country who do not believe in fighting for our freedom. Our country did not become the greatest country on earth by not defending ourselves. So yes, I will be waving the American flag, and I will be waving it proudly.
