Women's tennis team stays active with Florida tourney

During the week off of school, the women's tennis team went south to take on teams from all over the country.

To most everyone at SCSU, spring break is a time to sit back in the sun, have a nice glass of lemonade and do a little slow dancing under the old disco ball.

But to the Huskies tennis team, spring break was a time for tough competition under the blistering sun in Florida.

The Huskies left St. Cloud after winning three straight matches and looked to continue their success down south.

"It was a demanding week, but it was a lot of fun and we did really good as a team," said Alyssa Lauritsen. "You got to be feisty out there. All of the teams were pretty even, so it was great competition."

To start the week off, the Huskies took on a team from Wisconsin: the College of Wittenberg, a tough team for any competitor. And the women from Wisconsin were able to give the Huskies an unpleasant welcome to the Sunshine State. A 6-3 loss was not how the team wanted to begin their week with more great teams still to come.

Even playing in Florida, competition can take the fun out of the game. So to get back on their winning track, the Huskies started playing as a team and enjoying where they were. That proved to be a good idea, as the Huskies rebounded very well.

"For the rest of the week, our team played really well together," said Jessica Conway. "We had so much fun down there and we all enjoyed the weather, I did not want to come back."

The tough loss they suffered combined with the 80-degree weather and realizing where they were put a spark into the team. They came back Monday to pummel the team from Iowa, St. Ambrose College, in a 9-0 shutout in Winter Park, Fla.

That little spark didn't seem to want to go away all week. It carried on over to the next trio of matches. The team traveled back to Daytona Beach where they took on Haverford College. The Husky women doubled up the Pennsylvania team in a 6-3 victory.

St. Leo was the next victim of the Huskies modest three-game win streak. The team from Ohio had no chance to keep the Huskies from clinching their 11th win of the year with an 8-1 rout.

To end the competitive week in Florida, the Huskies took on St. Mary's from Indiana, the sister college to Notre Dame. In a back and forth match, the Huskies became court conquerors as they edged out a 5-4 victory pushing their winning-streak to four games and seven out of their last eight.

The Huskies flew back to see mounds of snow across St. Cloud with their chins high in the air. Both in the literal sense and figuratively the women's team came home with a lot of smiles. In posting a 4-1 record in Florida, the Huskies were given a huge boost in confidence returning home with a 12-6 overall record.

The tennis team will play more familiar teams from here on out. Up next for the Huskies will be Bemidji State. There will be little traveling, as the Huskies will play host this Friday at Gold's Gym. They will be trying to avenge their 5-0 loss earlier in the year to the Beavers.
