Unsigned bands to battle for prizes, prestige

Many students have been patiently waiting for a show like this, and now their expectations are going to be fully rewarded: University Program Board, in cooperation with Minneapolis-based Angel Beach Records, as well as KCLD and KVSC radio stations, is conducting Battle of the Unsigned Bands contest Tuesday.

The local rock stage is going to move to Atwood Ballroom for the evening, and the event, which starts at 7 p.m., promises to be very interesting and intriguing. Otto 81 , Docket 18 , 2nd Hand Halo, Aurora Court Project and Sunny Travels are going to entertain viewers with their music while competing. This is the perfect chance for all the participating bands to share their ideas and views through music with the student community and, of course, to get known.

Kristi Michelson, Mississippi Music Fest Coordinator for UPB has said that 5 judges, representing Angel Beach Records, KCLD, KVSC and on-campus organizations are going to grade the bands skills.

The performers are facing quite a tough challenge: in the 20 minutes each band is given to perform, they will have to show their best. The judges will be rating them basing on originality and creativity, performance, stage presentation and audience participation.

That means that the spectators will play a significant role in the overall rating of each band. The prize that each band will be vying for is a chance to perform at Mississippi Music Fest and 10 hours of free recording time in Angel Beach Records studio.

Various gift certificates to Applebee's and Schmitt's music will also be given as prizes.

While the bands are polishing their last chords till perfection, the excitement among students about the Battle of the Unsigned Bands is getting bigger and bigger. It's obvious, as many of them are going to see their friends on stage and want to come and support them.

Zachary Dorholt, bass player for Docket 18 , says that it is going to be a good show fueled by a very tough competition. Though current members of his band have been together for only three months, he is very excited about their show and hopes a lot of people who will come to watch and cheer for the bands.
