Tennis squad gets chilly reception at Missouri State

Spring break saw the SCSU men's tennis squad in Florida, where they enjoyed the warm weather and the chance to play tennis where tennis was meant to be played: outside. This weekend, the Huskies arrived in Missouri to take on Northwest Missouri State where the game was supposed to be played indoors.

However, due to a scheduling conflict, the evening contest ended up taking place outdoors where the thermometer read a frigid 28 degrees, a far cry from the ideal weather in Florida that SCSU enjoyed just one week ago.

Not only did the Huskies have to try to avoid frostbite, they also had to try to figure out a way to beat a tough Northwest Missouri State squad. Northwest Missouri State ended up winning the contest, 7-2. According to fifth-year SCSU head coach Jerry Anderson, the game easily could have went the other way.

"If we could've got some bounces to go our way, it would've been a different match," Anderson said.

Anderson's assessment rang true particularly in the doubles contests. The number one doubles squad of Bryan Baumann and Josh Lunak lost their match by a single game while the number two pairing of Casey Haselwander and Todd Peterson also fell by a single game.

"It was tough but you've just got to deal with it," said SCSU's number-one singles player and team leader Todd Bishop of the adverse weather conditions. "I don't think the guys have ever played in something that cold before. We handled the adversity well, though, and came away with a couple points against a tough team."

Earning the two points for the Huskies were Baumann and Peterson, both with victories in singles action.

SCSU moved back indoors on Saturday and proceeded to plow through both Truman State and Emporia State, 9-0. Bishop, Baumann, Peterson, Haselwander and Zachary O'Donnell all earned singles victories against Truman.

Anderson shuffled the doubles lineup slightly, as Bishop teamed with senior Doug Lecy for a victory at the number one doubles slot while the teams of Baumann/Lunak and Haselwander/Peterson remained the same and came up with victories.

The lineup and the outcome were identical for the evening contest with Emporia St. as the Huskies cruised once again by a score of 9-0.

The weekend left SCSU with 14-6 record and a 13-day layoff until their next contest. The Huskies sights remain set on winning the NCC, something they have been able to do seven times since 1990.

"We've played some quality opponents on our last couple of trips which raised our level of play," Bishop said. "We need to carry this to the conference tournament which is always our goal to win."

"We had to adjust to a lot of stuff bad weather, bad lighting," Anderson said of the weekend. "We played well, though."

After the layoff, SCSU will resume play at home against Minnesota, Morris and Concordia on April 5 at Gold's Gym in Sartell.
