St. Cloud bars may stay open later

A bill that was passed by the Minnesota State Senate on Tuesday would allow hotel bars in St. Cloud to stay open until 2 a.m. Monday through Friday and 2:30 a.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The original bill only included the cities of Minneapolis, St. Paul and Duluth but was amended to include St. Cloud, Bloomington and Rochester. Higgins believes that the proposed bill will allow these cities to attract more conventions because the attendees will have a place to meet and talk afterwards. The hotel bars will not be required to adopt these new hours, but each city can choose to draft their own ordinances.

Most officials in the St. Cloud area are supporting the proposed bill. They feel that in order for St. Cloud to be competitive with the Twin Cities the city needs to be able to offer the later closing times.

St. Cloud area cities pass fair pay test

An analysis done by the St. Cloud Times showed that the cities of St. Cloud, Waite Park, Sartell, Sauk Rapids, St. Joseph and Stearns County as a whole have complied with the state's pay equity requirements within the past three years.

The test given by the Minnesota Department of Employee Relations requires local governments to show that they don't pay female employees less than their male counterparts. The percentages of male and female employees "predicted pay" is compared and if the ratio is 80 percent or less, it may indicate a problem.
