Softball team keeps on winning

The SCSU softball team continued their winning ways last weekend at the Concordia-St. Paul invite in the Arlington-Rice Dome in St. Paul. The Huskies were perfect on the weekend, winning all four of their games.

The weekend started out with a game against fellow Minnesotans as the Huskies took on Bemidji State University. The Huskies had 19 more runs than the Beavers in a 21-2 shellacking. Sophomore first baseman Brooke Gentzler had a home run in the game, bringing her season total to four. Tiffany Rose got the win and improved her season record to a perfect 4-0 as she allowed no earned runs and chalked up two strikeouts.

Nicole Webb had eight strikeouts as she pitched all seven innings and got the 7-3 win against the University of Mary in the second game of the day. Six players scored runs for the Huskies. Four of those players were brought home on the bat of catcher Abby Bourman.

"We played as a great team," said Husky head coach Paula U'Ren.

On Saturday, the Huskies' train just kept on rolling as they derailed opponent Jamestown. The Huskies drove in 10 runs to Jamestown's two. Again, seven Huskies scored runs, and again the bat of Bourman, and also the lumber of second baseman McKayla Kroll, both of whom had three RBIs, sent the majority of SCSU base runners home.

Concordia University was SCSU's last victim of the weekend, as Brooke Gentzler batted in both runs for the Huskies in a 2-1 victory.

Almost all the Huskies' players scored a run last weekend, as the team outscored their opponents 40-8 in four games. "It was a total team effort," Gentzler said.

"(It was) a better team effort than we put forth in Florida," said U'Ren about the Huskies' performance. "We put four good games together with lots of production from the offense."

Even though this past weekend's performance was very impressive, U'Ren believes the Huskies will get better and better with every game.

"We're at a pretty good start," U'Ren said. "We're still growing as a team and will continue to improve throughout the year." A scary thought for the rest of the North Central Conference.

The softball squad was supposed to be in action on Tuesday against Southwest State University at Selke Field, but the game was postponed due to that fluffy white precipitation that is still lingering on the ground. That game has not been rescheduled. Wednesday's game at Selke against University of Wisconsin, Superior, was also postponed for the same reason. That game was rescheduled for a doubleheader next Wednesday, starting at 3 p.m.

The Huskies will travel to North Dakota this weekend for the North Dakota State University Invite, in the warm snow-free confines of the Fargo Dome.
