Man says assault justifies anti-nudity

St. Cloud resident Ricky Schmatz claims that the only reason he is being charged with assault is because it will justify the county government's anti-nudity ordinance.

Schmatz was accused of punching his wife last May for trying to participate in amateur night at King's Inn. An incident that both he and his wife, Bev, said never happened. However, Benton County Attorney Robert Raupp said that there is substantial evidence and witnesses that prove the event occurred.

Raupp also said that Benton County does not need any more justification for the passing of the ordinance and that the case against Schmatz would have been prosecuted no matter where it occurred. Schmatz is scheduled to stand trial today.

Truck falls through ice, causes death

Two St. Cloud men were found dead on Saturday after their truck fell through the ice on Leech Lake.

Two other victims of the accident were able to swim to safety, a 10-year-old son of one of the men and a 20-year-old son of of the other. The names of the victims are not being released until the families have been notified.

Cass County deputies reported that the truck fell through the ice around 10:45 a.m. into about 30 feet of water. The two men were not able to escape from the vehicle. Autopsies will be performed later this week.
