Men's tennis gets 2 wins

The SCSU men's tennis squad showed no ill effects from a 12-day layoff as they cruised through a pair of matches against Minnesota-Morris and Concordia-Moorhead on Friday.

Head coach Jerry Anderson shuffled the regular line-up for the 3 p.m. match against Minnesota-Morris as senior Todd Bishop and junior Casey Haselwander were the only regulars in the singles draw. The lineup shuffle proved to be effective as the Huskies won, 9-0.

Doubles standout Doug Lecy stepped into singles action for only the fourth time this season and improved his singles record to 4-0. Jacob Greenman made his 2002 singles debut with an easy win while Bob Skenzich won for the third time in as many singles matches. Zach Ullwelling also earned a victory for SCSU.

In doubles play, the team of Bryan Baumann and Josh Lunak led the way with an easy victory while Casey Haselwander and Doug Lecy also earned a win. Jacob Greenman and Danny Peterson rounded out the doubles line-up for SCSU.

"All the guys are playing extremely well," Anderson said of his squad. "Everyone has shown flashes of greatness. Todd (Bishop) and Bryan (Baumann) have probably been our most consistent guys."

The SCSU team as a whole has also been quite consistent. Concordia-Moorhead found this out as they fell to the Huskies, 9-0 in the night cap.

Anderson returned to his regular singles line-up for the 6 p.m. showdown. The regulars, Bishop, Baumann, Haselwander, Peterson, Ullwelling, and Josh Lunak, achieved the same results as the afternoon line-up in leading the Huskies to another 9-0 victory.

With the two wins, SCSU improved to 16-6 for the season. Pacing the Huskies in singles victories is Bishop with 17. Not far behind is Baumann with a record of 15-5 and Haselwander at 14-7. The team of Bishop and Bauman lead the way in doubles action with a 9-3 mark.

SCSU will now have a week off to prepare for Friday's showdown with St. Olaf. With just under a month remaining in the season, the Huskies are looking to maintain their solid play all the way into the NCC Tournament.

Haselwander weighed in on what it will take to maintain the team's success. "We need to maintain our intensity from practice to matches. We also need to keep pushing each other," he said.

With the weather apparently set to finally begin improving, the Huskies will find themselves playing outside soon. But, is this necessarily a good thing?

"It's really not a big deal to be outside," Anderson said. "We're fortunate to have the facility we have to be able to play inside."

"Overall, I like playing indoors better," Haselwander added. "Whenever it's nice out I like being outside, but now I look out and all I see is snow. Playing inside also takes out factors such as wind."

In addition to the Friday match-up against St. Olaf, the 16-6 Huskies will also take on Winona and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh on Saturday.
