Sugar Ray set to perform

Top 40 band Sugar Ray is set to take the stage tonight at Halenbeck Hall. The show begins at 8 p.m.

"It's going to be such a great show," said Krista Porwoll, a fan in high anticipation.

Evidently, she's not alone. Some 1,745 tickets have been sold since March 8.

Not only are the people at the Atwood Information Desk busy selling tickets, but others are busy getting ready for the show.

There are several types of advertising used to promote and incite the anticipation for the event which will take place tonight. One is the four different types of posters which have been displayed all around campus, as well as neighboring cities and campuses.

Another includes University Program Board's work with KCLD. KCLD has been giving away tickets and backstage passes, and held an event called "Onstage for Backstage." This gave fans a chance Sunday at Crossroads Mall to sing along to Sugar Ray songs for backstage passes and tickets. An estimated 100 people showed up to watch these people perform.

Other ways of letting people know have been through various commercials through Charter Communications, flyers handed out and ticket giveaways at other events, as well as advertisements in various publications.

There are other preparations that need be made in order to get ready for the show besides letting people know about the event. There is a specific UPB subcommittee dedicated to preparation for this event. These people deal with hospitality for Sugar Ray, the volunteers, security, ticket takers and publicists. They also deal with recruiting the volunteers and communicating with them to get them organized and ready for the event. There are also people in charge of getting the dressing rooms organized, decorated and cleaned.

"There is a lot of work that goes into bringing a concert to campus," said UPB Concerts Coordinator Lindsay Albrecht. "We are very fortunate to be able to bring big-name acts to St. Cloud. Not many schools have that privilege."

And all that work will pay off. The ticket sales increase as the days go by, and all the committee members experience frequent displays of anticipation throughout the community. People all over are excited not only for the show, but to "see Mark McGrath in person," Albrecht said.

Overall, the event will be good for everyone.

"We are very excited about the show on Thursday," Albrecht said. "It is going to be a great time. (Sugar Ray) puts on a great show. I think people will be really surprised."

Tickets are still available for the concert, which begins at 8 p.m. tonight. Tickets are $24 lower level or $22 upper level for Public/Faculty/Staff and $16 lower level or $12 upper level for SCSU Students (limit two per Student ID).
