Snow delays start of intramurals

When April comes around, people tend to think about baseball, sunshine and green grass. But this year, things are different.

Early April snow was unfortunately not an April Fool's joke. It is having a direct effect on happenings here at SCSU.

The softball intramurals were scheduled to start April 1, but have been postponed. According to Butch Fealy, the campus recreation coordinator for intramurals and special events, the softball intramural season was pushed back from its original start up date to April 15.

"We always schedule the softball season early, hoping that the weather will cooperate," Fealy said. "This year it obviously didn't. The frustrating thing is making sure we get enough games in before our tournament at the end of the season."

That tournament is also being pushed back to April 26 and 27.

"Fortunately, there aren't that many spring intramurals this year," he said. "We have tennis doubles scheduled to start April 18. We don't think that there will be any problems with that."

Campus Recreation is still taking applications for doubles tennis. Applications will be accepted until April 17.

Club sports roundup

This past weekend, the SCSU men's rugby team was in Cedar Falls, Iowa, for the Collegiate Cup tournament, hosted by the University of Northern Iowa. On Saturday, they defeated Luther College 49-5 in their first game, followed by a close loss to the University of Iowa 41-39 in triple overtime. Despite the loss, they qualified for the semifinals by a points tiebreaker. Terry Helmer, president of the rugby club, was pleased with his team's efforts.

"I was happy with how we played against Luther. We played our game plan, and was successful with that," Helmer said. "I'm concerned with our conditioning. We're not a good conditioned team, and that will hurt us in the long run."

On Sunday, they faced host Northern Iowa, and were pounded 87-0.

"That was a rough game," Helmer said. "We had some injuries that hurt us, so we had a few rookies in there. That's no excuse for how we played, though. We are looking forward to them coming back in three weeks for our All-Saints tourney."

The All-Saint's tournament, hosted by SCSU, takes place April 27-28.

The SCSU rowing club is having an ongoing fundraiser to build a boathouse garage to store all of the team's equipment. Kevin Lynch, the boathouse committee chair, said that this fundraiser has been going on since March.

"Our goal is to raise $80,000; so far, we've raised about $3,000, mainly through team fundraisers," he said. "We're basically hoping for corporate sponsorships from companies around the area. That's where we'll get our larger donations. We've been working with Campus Recreation, and the city of St. Cloud to get approval for a location. As of now, we're looking at the location being at Wilson Park."

This isn't the crew team's first attempt at fundraising.

"This is our third try at this project," Lynch said. "Our last attempt was almost a success. Unfortunately, we were about $10,000 short, and couldn't fund the project further."

The Rowing Club accepts many different levels of donation, ranging from $200 to $20,000. For more information, visit www.scsucrew.com.
