Powell's request for peace is refused

Violence in the Middle East will continue despite Secretary of State Colin Powell's request to Palestinian leader Yassar Arafat to halt the fighting.

Arafat refused Powell's request because of Israel's military thrust into Palestine. In order for him to agree to cease-fire, Israel must withdraw its troops from the West Bank. Powell then met with Israel Prime Minister Ariel Sharon to ask for a pullback from the area, but was also rebuffed.

Powell was scheduled to meet with Sharon again on Sunday in Tel Aviv. He will also talk again with Arafat on Tuesday.

Timorese voters elect first president

The first presidential election in Dili, East Timor took place Sunday. It was a historical event for the country that gained its independence from Indonesia in 1999.

Former resistance leader Xanana Gusamo was the overwhelming favorite in the election and is expected to come out on top. His only challenger, former temporary president in 1975 Francisco Xavier do Amaral, said that he is only running to provide voters with a choice. The two men were seen linking arms before entering the same polling station to cast their votes.

Voting ended at 4 p.m. local time on Sunday, or 2 a.m. St. Cloud time. Official results are expected to be released on Wednesday.
