Disrespectful employees need to learn

In a letter to the editor, another student complained about lack of respect from SCSU employees.

As the editor of University Chronicle, it is not uncommon for me to hear working students complain about some SCSU employees who seem to target students who work at University Chronicle.

I have come to expect certain reactions from some employees, from office workers to professors. Most of these disrespectful employees hate me because I work at University Chronicle. Those who do not know of my University Chronicle connection, seem to dislike me because I am a student.

As a non-traditional, transfer student, I was surprised when some employees seemed more interested in getting rid of me than keeping me interested in SCSU.

When I started working at University Chronicle, I got more used to it. At one of my first photo assignments, one employee introduced herself to me by telling me she did not like University Chronicle.

I felt like she had slapped me. I had already worked at a community newspaper for almost two years and I had never before felt helplessly disliked simply because of my association with the newspaper.

Unfortunately, this type of reaction from some employees has continued. Most of the employees who show vendettas against University Chronicle and its workers have never even met me or the other students who currently work here.

I know that some students who have worked at University Chronicle have made mistakes, but who hasn't? I believe that most of the mistakes were not intentional. Besides, why should I, or any current working student, suffer for something that a different student did three, 10 or 30 years ago?

The purpose of University Chronicle is to inform the student body and to provide students hands-on working experience. This student-run newspaper gives students a chance to learn from employees and vice versa. It is a perfect opportunity for SCSU employees to teach students how to be respectful professionals in their field. Employees who are disrespectful teach students how to be disrespectful.

As for other students, it seems quite obvious to me that some SCSU employees simply dislike all students. Why they work at a university is beyond me, but they should remember that the students are paying their bills. And students should remember that they also can file complaints.

As a child, I had been taught to respect everyone, especially those who are older than me. I know that the lesson is instilled deep within me because even this essay has been difficult for me to write. Although I too am an adult and deserve respect, it is not easy for me to complain that some adults are very disrespectful.

Fortunately, the majority of the SCSU employees have been very respectful toward me during my college career. I chose to attend SCSU because of its photojournalism program, and I decided to graduate from this university because I am proud of SCSU and the people who enjoy working and studying here.

A few weeks ago, I received a notice in the mail saying that I will graduate on May 11. I will be the only child in my family of 11 to graduate from a university.

I am eager to graduate and move on, but I know I will miss SCSU. I will always remember the people who made my learning experience worth every dollar that I borrowed to pay my tuition.

I will remember the professors who respected me and taught me well. I will remember the employees who helped me whenever I needed it. I will remember my fellow students who I learned with in class and learned from while working at University Chronicle. I will think of the students who will take my place. I hope the best for them.

As for the SCSU employees who are disrespectful, I hope that they too can learn something about respect at this university it's a great place to learn.
